I don’t like telling people what to do. In fact, I like to avoid it at all costs, but honestly you need these television shows in your life (if they aren’t already). TV is very important to me. It’s basically the melting pot of all things culture. I think TV allows you to empathise with characters a lot easier than film does because you’re spending hours with them as they go about their lives. So have a look, pick a TV show and make heaps of popcorn because you’re going to binge watch and that’s a promise.

I won’t tell you too much about these shows but trust me when I say they’re flipping amazing.

How To Get Away With Murder

SUPER QUICK SUMMARY: 5 college students are chosen by their professor to work with her on cases. HOWEVER, THEY ARE SLOWLY DRAWN INTO THE DRAMA OF HER LIFE AND OF COURSE, MURDER.

NOTABLE CHARACTERS: Viola Davis as Annalise Keating is actually pure genius. I’ve never seen such a multi-faceted and downright bitchin’ character. Without her, this show is nothing.

BONUS POINTS: A non-linear plotline that always keeps you guessing and an equal focus on every character. Trust me no one is what they seem.

NUMBER OF SEASONS: 1 (ongoing)

Shameless

SUPER QUICK SUMMARY: A low-income family in Chicago’s south side cheat, steal, lie and work their bums off to keep afloat, whilst struggling with a absentee mother, alcoholic dad and general hijinks.

NOTABLE CHARACTERS: Debby Gallagher and Mickey Milkovich. The former because her transformation into a teenage girl was so spot on (in my opinion). The latter because character development, hellooooo.

BONUS POINTS: 1) Everyone has a cool accent  2) Some diversity (and not just in race. Hint, hint)

NUMBER SEASONS: 4 (ongoing, season 5 out January)

In The Flesh

SUPER QUICK SUMMARY: Teen zombie. Is cured. Has to live with repercussions of his death as well as prejudice since he is a zombie.

NOTABLE CHARACTERS: Kieran (who is the main character). He’s an extremely likeable and flawed character and he looks like a dear. That is a fact.

BONUS POINTS: Amy Dyer. I mean, just look at her.

NUMBER OF SEASONS: 2 (3rd season pending)

Misfits

SUPER QUICK SUMMARY: A group of teenage delinquents are struck by lightening and develop powers. They do not become super heroes.

NOTABLE CHARACTERS: Nathan (played by Robert Sheehan). He starts off annoying as hell but in the end his humour grows on you. In addition to this is Rudy, who has a very, ahem, varied personality.

BONUS POINTS: Use of dark humour.

NUMBER OF SEASONS: 5 (completed)

The Mindy Project

SUPER QUICK PLOT: 30-something OB/GYN navigates through life in New York and hopes to find love. Do not gag, it’s actually quite great.

NOTABLE CHARACTERS: There are so many but I’m going to settle for Beverly, the nurse. She quite literally has no idea what is going on.

BONUS POINTS: Mindy Kaling talking to a Barbie doll in the first episode.

NUMBER OF SEASONS: 3 (currently in mid-season hiatus)
